Sojourner Speak
COACHING
We believe that confronting and addressing microaggressions is essential to fostering equity, emotional well-being, and professional growth.

The Sojourner Speak coaching series empowers individuals to navigate these challenges with confidence and resilience while advocating for systemic change.
As an African American women I am deeply aware of the pervasive dynamics of social injustice and white supremacy, I recognize how these systemic forces manifest in daily life through microaggressions.
I understand the layered and often invisible burden they place on individuals, particularly in professional and social spaces.
The Sojourner Speak coaching series
empowers individuals not
only to address the injustices they face but also to use those experiences as catalysts
for personal and professional growth, driving change in their environments and within themselves.

Historical perspective of microaggression
Microaggressions are acts of discrimination that have long been a pervasive issue for BIPOC individuals in workplaces and other environments. Historically rooted in systemic racism and inequality, these behaviors stem from stereotypes, biases, and social hierarchies established during colonialism, slavery, segregation, and discriminatory policies.

BIPOC employees have frequently encountered microaggressions such as comments that undermine their competence or identity and having their ideas minimize or dismissed. These actions often occur under the guise of politeness or ignorance but reinforce exclusion and inequity.
Microaggressions permeate the professional workplace, manifesting in assumptions about intelligence and cultural identity. For example, BIPOC individuals are often questioned about their capabilities, intelligence, and "belonging" or subjected to comments that exoticize or diminish their heritage.
The cumulative impact of these microaggressions contributes to feelings of isolation, stress, and diminished mental health, underscoring the need for support through constructive dialogue, and systemic change to create truly inclusive environments.

Our Clients Say
"As a mother of two adolescent girls, Sojourners Speak group sessions was especially supportive to me during the pandemic as I unsuccessfully attempted to move "normally" in a truly "abnormal" situation...I looked forward to coming together to talk about our shared experiences as Black women, provide resources, discuss the society we are in as well as just be in community with phenomenal, non-monolithic Black women who care deeply about the well-being of themselves as well as others."
Geneva Porter
"I was especially appreciative of the Sojourners Speak sessions during the pandemic. At that time of social isolation, these meetings provided an opportunity to connect with caring and concerned Black women who have had to navigate workplace discrimination, health care disparities and a host of other microaggressions throughout our careers and personal lives. The sense of deep faith, joy and love for one another, our families and our friends kept me looking forward to each session. Most importantly, Nancy's guidance and focus on gaining in-depth understanding of the topic being discussed were immensely helpful."
Julia Turner Lowe

Remembering at a time of great loss during a global pandemic, Sojourner Speaks gifted me with sanctuary.
